Tech Trek

Tech-Trek-TBCC-02

Tech Trek  is a math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in math, science and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational facilities are located on or near to a college campus where camps are held.   Learn more at www.aauw-techtrek.org.

On June 21-26, 2015, a Tech Trek camp will be held in Tillamook, OR.  The girls will stay in the Tillamook County Fair 4-H dorms. There will be dorm monitors staying with them. Classes will be held at TBCC.

  •  December 2015–Tillamook has been selected to hold Tech Trek again in the summer of 2015!

Tillamook Bay Community College has again been selected as the site of a Tech Trek camp! Tech Trek in Tillamook will be held June 21-26, 2015. Currently, we are looking for additional funding, volunteers, and, most importantly, campers! Girls must be current 7th graders and nominated by their science or math teacher to attend. We have contacted schools in Tillamook, Lincoln, Clatsop, Columbia, and Yamhill counties to begin the nomination process. Check in with the AAUW Tech Trek Facebook page and our Tillamook Tech Trek website to stay up to date on camp planning.

  • March 2014–Additional funding

The Trek Tech Committee received the fantastic news that Tillamook AAUW has been awarded $6000 from the Ford Family Foundation Grant AND $4000 from a private donor! Ed Armstrong wrote the grant for us with input from the committee. Dr. Connie Green has done a wonderful job as Fundraiser Director for Tech Trek. The total of $20,000 ($10,000 from National AAUW) gives us plenty to work with this summer and a good start on running the camp again in 2015. We have 75 student nominees from the school districts in Astoria all the way down the coast to Lincoln County! Applications are going out to those girls and 30 will be selected from that pool. We’re on our way!

  • Nov. 2013– Announcing “Tech Trek” Camp! (by Kathy Gervasi, AAUW Tillamook President)

Tillamook AAUW and   Tillamook Bay   Community College received the exciting news that Tillamook will be one of the sites for 2014 “Tech Trek” camp, the only one in  Oregon.  Dr. Emily Henry, (OSU Open Campus Coordinator in   Tillamook County) author of the grant for $10,000 just returned from the training at AAUW National in   Washington,   D.C. October 12th and 13th.  The three new pilot sites are   New Mexico   State   University,   University of   Alabama and   Tillamook Bay Community College.  The returning camps from 2013 are   Bowling Green   State University,   Eckerd   College (   St. Petersburg, FL),   Pacific   Lutheran   University, and     Southwestern   Oklahoma   State   University.  This is a wonderful honor for AAUW Oregon!

Committee members starting to plan are AAUW members Dr. Emily Henry, Dr. Connie Green (TBCC President), Dr. Lori Gates (TBCC Dean of Students), Kathy Gervasi (retired School Administrator & Tillamook AAUW President), Lisa Phipps (Director of Tillamook Estuaries Partnership) and Lisa Dion (Tillamook High School Asst. Principal).

The week-long camp will be designed for thirty girls entering 8th grade and they will learn about math, science, and technology, perform experiments and hands-on-activities and meet female role models working in STEM fields.  Since 1998, serving more than 9,000 girls, this empowering camp has opened up a world in which girls become scientists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists.  The hope is to involve female science and math teachers in   Tillamook    County, businesses, volunteers, AAUW members, college faculties and OSU Extension to help with this opportunity for girls.

If your Branch is interested in financial support for one girl, contact Emily Henry at emily.henry@oregonstate.edu and to learn more about the Oregon Tech Trek camp in Tillamook, please see our camp website: http://techtrek-or.aauw.net/.
